Cranfield alumnus Luis Cabrita de Silva tells us about his MBA degree and where it has brought him today.
When I began my initial search back in 1998 the necessary criteria for me was simple:
- Unquestionable reputation
- One-year course
- Broad cross-section of international students
- Alumni network
- Ultimately the deciding factors were the alumni I had already met through dealings with the admission staff.
My initial research was based internally on my company to get a consensus. I also spoke to friends outside my organisation. Armed with some basic facts and my own beliefs, I began targeting a small number of business schools. Having positioned myself from the outset as someone wanting the company to finance my studies in the medium term, I was then in a position to attend various MBA fairs. It was only after this time I began visiting my chosen schools.
I ruled out an executive MBA due to the fact that firstly it would take longer to complete. Secondly, work commitments meant regular overseas work at relatively short notice would interfere with my studying. Thirdly, finding an extra 15 to 20- hours-per-week free time would be a strain and finally I wanted the most out of interacting with my fellow students on a regular basis so that real friendships could be formed.
My primary, secondary and further education has always been outside Portugal, and based in the UK. However, I realised early on what a great experience it was and that I was in a privileged position. The opportunities were superior to those that would have been made available to me in Portugal. I have met some inspiring people over the years and continue to do so at Cranfield.
